Chapter 43

Set-Specific Problems: Sports Card Edition

Every sports product line has its own grading “personality.”

Knowing them helps you avoid bad grading candidates.

Panini Prizm

most scratch-prone chrome surface in the hobby

print lines everywhere

edges chip easily

centering often left-right skewed

Topps Chrome

cleaner print quality, but:

roller lines

foil dimples

occasional indent circles

Select / Optic

bends/warps more than most sets

concave bowing is common

color surfaces show fingerprint oils heavily

National Treasures / Flawless / Immaculate

thicker cards = corner pressure

edge chipping on patch windows

foil borders scratch extremely easily

Bowman Chrome / Sapphire

excellent surface quality

much better centering

but print dots (“snow”) are common on some runs

Each set has patterns.

AI picks them up instantly — collectors can learn them too.
