Chapter 34

Why Chrome Cards Grade Differently Than Paper Cards

Chrome-style cards (Prizm, Topps Chrome, Optic, etc.) have:

more visible scratches

sensitive surface coating

prone-to-lines printing

easier chipping edges

harsher reflections

Chrome Pros

sharper print

stronger colors

premium feel

Chrome Cons (grading-wise)

surface flaws are harshly punished

scratches amplify under light

print lines are common

Paper cards generally:

hide small scratches

chip less on edges

show wear more gradually

Understanding the difference helps pick better grading candidates.
